Producers Resurrect Legendary Great Snow-Earth-Water Race and Invite People to “Come Up to Whistler and Play”

Whistler, BC (February 19, 2014) -- Whistler’s summer event calendar just got a boost with a new festival kicking off the season on the Victoria Day Long Weekend, May 16-19, 2014. GO Fest, Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival, funded by the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) through the Province of British Columbia’s Resort Municipality Initiative, will celebrate the unique time of year in Whistler when people can choose their own adventure, whether it be winter or summer themed pursuits.

“I am thrilled to see the creation of GO Fest on the Victoria Day Long Weekend,” said Whistler Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden. “Whistler has a robust calendar of events and festivals and adding a festival in May will further strengthen Whistler’s year-round offerings. May is one of the best months of the year to participate in all the activities that make Whistler an amazing destination, and we are working with the festival producers to present a four-day schedule of active programming that celebrates Whistler’s great outdoors and the convergence of winter and summer recreation activities.”

The Victoria Day Long Weekend has long been the launch of summer activities in Whistler with golf courses opening their greens, the mountain bike trails and Whistler Mountain Bike Park reclaiming their turf, and skiers and snowboarders getting their last spring turns on Whistler Blackcomb’s high alpine slopes. The challenge in experiencing Whistler in May is simply deciding what to do first.

While GO Fest’s schedule of events is still being finalized, participation, education and inspiration will be cornerstones for the family-friendly programming. The festival producers have revealed The Great Snow-Earth-Water race, last held in Whistler more than 20 years ago, will make a comeback on Sunday, May 18 as one of the anchor events. The exact format and route of the race is not yet finalized but it will stay true to its roots as a multisport, team relay featuring snow, earth and water.

“The details for GO Fest are coming together quickly and we anticipate, in addition to the Great Snow-Earth-Water Race, we will have a mass participation event designed for a broader range of fitness on the Saturday, as well as other scheduled events over the weekend showcasing exciting, higher level of competition for both competitors and spectators to enjoy,” said Darren Kinnaird, General Manager of Crankworx Events Inc., the production company to which the RMOW awarded the contract to produce the inaugural GO Fest, Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival.

The development of GO Fest during the Victoria Day Long Weekend is part of the RMOW’s Festival, Events and Animation program and is one component of the larger May Long Weekend Initiative.

More information about GO Fest, Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival, will be available as soon as the schedule of events is finalized. Check back at www.greatoutdoorsfest.com.
