Calling All Families: Visit June Lake, CA This Winter to Ski, Snowboard, and Much More
Kids 12 and under Ski FREE at June Mountain
June Lake, CA (September 23, 2013) -- The mood in June Lake feels festive, even before a single snowflake has fallen and the aspen leaves have yet to turn color. That’s because the June Lake community is eagerly anticipating a magical and wonderful winter, complete with skiing and snowboarding once again at their own beloved June Mountain.
That’s right: June Mountain Ski Area will reopen this winter following a temporary closure in 2012-13. Winter operations will resume Dec. 14, 2013 for the 2013-14 season. To add to the exciting news—like a big, cheerful bow on a highly anticipated present—the resort announced that kids under 12 will ski free all winter long.
June Mountain’s family-friendly slopes are among the many charming attractions in the picturesque alpine town of June Lake, which is tucked in a scenic Sierra valley just 20 miles north of sister resort town Mammoth Lakes. Winter recreationists will be delighted with the return of the cross-country ski trail in Silver Meadow, along with two popular events—the second annual Winter Festival & Triple Threat Triathlon and the second annual Snowmobile Poker Rally.
The June Lake Winter Festival includes a Triple Threat Triathlon for snow-savvy racers who compete in cross country skiing, snowshoeing and laser-rifle shooting. Organizers of the weekend-long winter festival extend an invitation to visitors who are “warmly invited to some cool events!” The festival, which takes place Jan. 24-25, 2014, also features free snow games and activities, and a snow sculpture competition that offers fun for kids and adults alike.
On Feb. 28-March 1, 2014, the June Lake Snowmobile Poker Rally provides the opportunity to experience friendly winter competition and fun on snowmobile trails that stretch from June Lake to the heights of Glass Mountain. The weekend also features guided snowmobile tours and activities appropriate for the whole family.
The intimate mountain village of June Lake is located in the Eastern Sierra approximately 310 miles from Los Angeles. From the San Francisco Bay Area, June Lake is about 360 miles on Highways 80 and 50 to US 395 in the winter. Nestled below towering granite mountain peaks and situated along the well-maintained June Lake Loop/Highway 158, June Lake is well deserving of its nickname, the Switzerland of California.
Endless winter activities in this mountain enclave include skiing and snowboarding at June Mountain, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and good old-fashioned fun in the snow like sledding and building snowmen. June Lake’s numerous lodging properties, restaurants, shops, and four gorgeous lakes, coupled with majestic alpine scenery, create a magical winter retreat and, quite simply, a deeper mountain experience.
