Skiers and Snowboarders Ride for a Cause at USARC Ski-a-Thon
Ski-a-Thon helps individuals with disabilities hit the slopes at Bear Mountain
Big Bear Lake, CA (March 6, 2014) -- This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the U.S. Adaptive Recreation Center (USARC) at Bear Mountain. On Saturday, March 8, hundreds of skiers and snowboarders will hit the slopes for the return of USARC’s annual Ski-a-Thon, which raises much-needed funds for USARC’s ongoing operations at Bear Mountain.
Proceeds from the USARC ski-a-thon offset the expenses of purchasing specialized adaptive ski equipment, training 200 USARC volunteers and professional staff members, and subsidizing the cost of lessons for individuals with disabilities all over Southern California.
“With Bear Mountain's partnership, the USARC enables people with disabilities to enjoy the same feelings of freedom, challenge and accomplishment that are so rewarding to other (non-disabled) skiers,” said USARC Executive Director Tom Peirce. “If you think about it, all skiing and snowboarding is adaptive, we just take those adaptations a little further. A successful Ski-A-Thon enables us to continue to do that.”
Ski-a-Thon participants still have time to sign up, and can register as individuals or in teams of four. Participants will receive a full-day lift ticket at Bear Mountain with line-cutting privileges, a Survival Kit, Ski-a-Thon t-shirt, complimentary lunch, and access to the après-ski party complete with a raffle, auction and entertainment. Raffle prizes include lodging, lift tickets, gift cards, apparel, and more.
“We couldn’t be prouder to have the USARC here at Bear Mountain,” said Chris Riddle, Vice President of Marketing for Big Bear Mountain Resorts. “It’s an inspirational organization that really captures the spirit of what skiing and snowboarding is all about: passion, dedication, and fun.”
For twenty-five years, the USARC has worked with schools, hospitals and rehabilitation centers to serve children and adults with all types of cognitive or physical disabilities. The USARC has provided adaptive programs for everyone from wounded warriors, to children with cerebral palsy, to amputees, and everyone in between.
