SnowSports Industries America (SIA)’s consumer website Snowlink.com, which re-launched this week, arrived just in time for the 2012/2013Winter Season.  The site features a fresh look with a new logo, bluebird skies and dynamic easy-to-use homepage. Snowlink visitors will also have a variety of content at their fingertips including featured articles and helpful tips on fashion, gear, safety, instructional advice, a snow sports – specific blog feed, plus links to Resort, Retail and Ski/Snowboard Club finders in their region.

Take the Bring a Friend Challenge

beginner snowboarder“Taking the Challenge” simply means that you invited and helped enroll at least one newcomer to a beginner lesson or lesson package provided by a professional instructor. You can win prizes from Challenge sponsors for helping to enroll newcomers even if you are one yourself. You can enter more than once by introducing several different newcomers. Please read the Contest Rules before signing up.

There are two ways to qualify for prizes in the national Bring a Friend Challenge (on this Web site).

1) If you are a current skier or snowboarder, just introduce at least one newcomer – a friend or family member – to a beginner lesson or lesson package from a professional instructor.

2) If you are a newcomer yourself, bring another newcomer with you to take beginner lessons from a pro. It’s more fun to learn with a friend or family member.

Either way, you will be considered an “Inviter”. Those those who you invite/help enroll will be considered “Invitees”. These terms will apply when the registration form is filled out.

Qualified participants – Inviters – can win among weekly prizes offered by Challenge sponsors. Product prize winners will be drawn starting the first week in January through March 17. Grand Prize four-day trips to Sun Valley, Idaho; Park City, Deer Valley and The Canyons in Utah or Smugglers’ Notch in Vermont (during the 2013-14 season) will be awarded at the end of the Challenge. The national Bring a Friend Challenge runs from December 1, 2012 – March 17, 2013.

To qualify for prizes:

1. Inviters must out the Bring a Friend Challenge Entry Form (a new form must be used for each new person you invite).

2. The person(s) you invite must take a beginner lesson or lesson package from a professional instructor. Lesson programs are available HERE or at a local venue of choice. Either way, a copy of a receipt, voucher or beginner lift ticket must be uploaded to verify that your friend(s) or family member(s) took the lesson(s). Vermont Ski Resorts Boast Record Openings

Vermont Ski Resorts Boast Record Openings

Montpelier, VT

Upgrades in snowmaking paired with ideal temperatures have propelled Vermont ski resorts into a promising early season. After starting the season with the most ski areas open in the country for Thanksgiving, Vermont’s snowguns have launched the resorts into December with nearly 20% open terrain for skiers and riders, the strongest opening since the epic 2008-2009 season.

“We can certainly attribute a successful early season to our expansive 80% statewide snowmaking coverage,” said Ski Vermont President Parker Riehle. “The resorts’ investments in state-of-the-art, highly efficient snowmaking combined with early season snowfall have given us the boost we need to fulfill the pent up demand of skiers and riders.”

Vermont ski areas also boasted some of the earliest openings in the state’s history.  Killington Resort opened for pass-holders in mid-October and for the season on November 5, 2012. Smugglers’ Notch Resort saw its earliest opening in 5 years with more available terrain than in the last four, helping early season lift ticket sales and bookings, which in the last two weeks have been some of the strongest in 3 years.

Burke Mountain had its earliest and most successful opening ever, opening December 1st” said Hannah Collins, Burke’s Marketing Manager. “And with the new upgrades in our snowmaking equipment we were also opening with the most trails that we ever have.”

Jay Peak Resort had its best opening weekend in the resort’s history and that excitement is projecting forward. Jay Peak is averaging a 93% occupancy across all of its lodging properties with most holidays already sold out. Jay Peak and Burke Mountain have invested a combined $1.5 million in snowmaking upgrades in expanded coverage and low-energy snow guns.

Okemo Resort is boasting its earliest opening since 2003 and the fourth earliest in Okemo’s 57-year history. Cold temperatures in early November allowed the resort to open for the 2012-13 season on November 8. Over the summer, Okemo added 42 new HKD Snowmakers SV-10 tower guns to its arsenal. Featuring adjustable water flow levers, nozzle versatility and advanced valving technology, the HKD Snowmakers SV-10 tower guns make snow more efficiently at closer-to-freezing temperatures.

Other investments into snowmaking that have helped propel the success of this early ski season include Bromley’s addition of 60 new permanent energy efficient HKD tower guns and Smugglers’ Notch Resort’s investment of over $1,000,000 adding 150 new high efficiency guns. Stowe Mountain Resort also invested in its state-of-the-art snowmaking operations with 4.7 million dollars in new equipment and upgrades that included 325 HKD tower guns, 150 energy efficient land guns, 16 Super Pole Cat fan guns and seven miles of new snowmaking pipe.

As temperatures drop to seasonal levels this afternoon, Vermont ski resorts are firing up their guns yet again to prepare for another stellar early season weekend. Middlebury College Snow Bowl plans to open for the season on Saturday, December 8th and Bromley Mountain and Burke Mountain will reopen for the public on Saturday as well.

SIMS Snowboards Launches Tom Sims Legacy Fund With SOS Outreach

Tom Sims Legacy Fund: Fund To Provide Snowboarding Scholarships to Underprivileged Youth

(DENVER) – Dec. 4, 2012 – SIMS Snowboards is proud to announce the launch of the Tom Sims Legacy Fund in partnership with SOS Outreach, a national nonprofit that works to build character and self esteem among at-risk youth through outdoor adventure sports, to provide snowboarding scholarships to underprivileged kids.

SOS Outreach serves more 5,000 participants annually and the Tom Sims Legacy Fund will create a sustainable annual campaign for the organization dedicated to snowboarding programs. All donations made to SOS through The Tom Sims Legacy Fund will provide scholarships to kids to participate in five-day Learn to Ride programs, which includes five days of professional instruction featuring the SOS Core Value curriculum, lift tickets, as well as equipment rentals and apparel.

“The Fund was not only established to honor the memory of Tom, but to spread the love of snowboarding to anyone and everyone – a pursuit Tom lived day in and day out,” said SIMS brand manager Marc Vitelli. “SOS is the perfect partner to memorialize Tom and his dedication to the sport.”

SIMS Snowboards kicked off the Tom Sims Legacy Fund with a $7,000 donation earlier this year. The initial donation will enable SOS to scholarship more than 150 participants in the program this year alone.

SOS Outreach is honored to be a part of Tom’s legacy through the Tom Sims Legacy Fund,” said Seth Ehrlich, Development Director of SOS Outreach. “We consider Tom and the SIMS brand part of the SOS family, and are proud to play a role in keeping Tom’s dedication and passion alive through our programs.”

SOS works with 5,000 participants annually, operating at 32 ski and snowboard resorts in 15 states, and provides 20,000 program days each year. SOS Outreach focuses on quality, quantity, and duration to ensure success in its programs. Since its inception, SOS Outreach has brought more than 30,000 youth into winter sports. In 2009, the National Ski Areas Association recognized SOS Outreach for bringing more minorities into winter sports than any other single initiative.
