About Utah: The ski bums next door

PARK CITY — They moved in next door two years ago. Just drove up one day with no warning, pulling a U-Haul with New Jersey plates.

Looking back, the signs were there from the beginning. There were no kids with them. He didn’t drive off to work every morning. Neither did she. They had no visible means of support. Like Jimmy Stewart in “Rear Window” we watched them. What were they? Mafia? Drug-dealers? Loan sharks? Deadbeats?

Nope. Ski bums.

All they did was ski. The garage door would open, the SUV would back out, the skis would go on the rack, and they were off. Him especially. Day after day after day.

Couldn’t they get a job? Do something responsible? What must their parents be thinking?

There was this one small mitigating factor.

He was 68, she was 67.

Meet the neighbors: Chuck and Paddy Mollard. They went rogue on us, careened right off the grid, all in the name of giving retirement a good name. Their problem these days isn’t having enough to do, it’s having too much to do. So many runs, so little time.

Telemarker is racking up medals—including gold—at Teva Winter Mountain Games

Christopher EwartTelemark skiing is what it’s all about for 24-year-old Christopher Ewart. With an impressive resume that includes a gold medal in the Inaugural Teva Winter Mountain Games Best Trick (Double Front Flip) and many published photos in print and online magazines, Christopher is well on his way to becoming a big name in the Telemark industry. A Colorado native, Christopher loves to represent local brands such as Meier Skis, and works as a full-time EMT in the Vail Valley.

Which ski do you compete on?
I compete with the “Johnny Ringos” for Park and Pipe, and “The Doc” for Big Mountain.

My other sponsors include: SCARPA, Kind Design, Sweet Protection, and Beaver Creek Resort

Why Meier Skis?
I love the idea of independent companies searching for a better way to make skis. Anybody can make a good ski, but if they’re able to do it with renewable resources, and eco-friendly materials, it’s a huge plus. Pulling dying and downed wood from local forestry means less devastating impact on our environment. Bottom line, Meier makes some of the best skis in the industry, and they make them in the best way possible. I like that.

Q&A:

1. The mountain I learned to ski on was: Nashoba Valley, MA when I was 3 years old

2. I can’t live without: My skis or my dirtbike.

3. My favorite cuisine is: Sour Gummy Worms, beef jerky and orange Gatorade.

4. When I’m not skiing, you can find me: Twisting the throttle at a moto track or just enjoying a tasty beer in the sun.

5. My favorite movie of all time is without question: Dumb and Dumber…Duh! We’re in the Rockies!

6. Who/What inspires you? I try to use other sports as inspiration to innovate my free heel skiing. I’ll pick from snowboarding, motocross, skateboarding or surfing to try and generate ideas to bring to snow on my own skis. I love doing new tricks or variations that nobody has done before, and it’s easy with Telemark, because it’s just starting to get real popular in the freestyle scene.

7. Favorite:

  1. Bands: Bluegrass, Reggae, Hip Hop and Dubstep. You name it and it’s on my playlist.
  2. Books: I wish I had more interest in reading… but The Hitchhikers Guide to that Galaxy is an awesome book.
  3. Vacation Spots: Jackson Hole, Targhee, Moab, Vegas…  I love everywhere I go!

Christy Prior Places Second and Silje Norendal Nabs Third in

World Snowboard Tour (WST) Sanctioned Contest

Sarka After Winning First

Breckenridge, CO (April 6, 2013) — Twenty five of the best snowboarders from around the globe converged at Breckenridge Ski Resort today for the Supergirl Snow Pro in conjunction with Community Cup —the only all-women’s WST-sanctioned 5-Star event in the world.  The contest came to a thrilling close with Sarka Pancochova (Czech Republic) taking home both the title and the famous Supergirl cape.  Seven of the world’s top ten ranked pros competed in the event, which was developed to showcase the best of women’s snowboarding on a course completely designed by the riders.

Pancochova won the contest in her second run with an outstanding performance on both the jumps and rails, pulling tricks like a half-Cab 50-50 backside 360 off the barrel and a switch 540 for a score of 92.  Christy Prior, who landed a frontside rodeo 720, came in second with a score of 90.  X Games Champion, Silje Norendal, finished third with an 87.75.

“I did the best run of my life today. It was a great season-ending competition and it was so fun to be out here with these girls on a course we designed and voted on,” said Pancochova. “The conditions today were perfect: the weather, the course, the vibe. All of that contributed to what I was able to do today, and I can’t wait to compete in the Supergirl Snow Pro next year.”

The event supported eco-awareness and sustainability efforts through organizations like the Non-Toxic Revolution, Keep-A-Breast, Protect Our Winters, Plastic Pollution Coalition, 5Gyres and One Life.

This is the first event of the 2013 Supergirl Jam Series, the action sports industry’s only large-scale all-female competition and lifestyle series.  Developed as a celebration of female empowerment, the Supergirl Jam Series features more than 150 top female pros competing in snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing as well as ‘girl-power’ activities at events held throughout the year.

“The world’s best female snowboarders put on an absolutely amazing display today,” said Rick Bratman, CEO of ASA Entertainment , the event’s management company.  “We could not be more pleased with the event and we are very proud to have supported these talented ladies alongside our partners Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Paul Mitchell, Warner Bros. Television’s Suburgatory, Kicker Audio, GoPro, Community Cup and Breckenridge Ski Resort.”

The Supergirl Snow Pro in conjunction with the Community Cup will be broadcast nationally on Fox Sports Net (FSN) in the fall.  Stay tuned to www.SupergirlJam.com, www.Community-Cup.com and www.asaentertainment.com for show times and dates.
