CORRECT GOGGLE AND HELMET FIT FOR KIDS

The Goggle Gap campaign, initiated by a collaboration of snow sports industry manufacturers and associations, has been adopted by SnowSports Industries America to address the ever-important safety issue of correct helmet fit. The campaign is aimed at increasing awareness of kids through their pre-teens as well as their parents. Supportive materials demonstrate correct sizing, fitting and adjustments for helmet + goggle systems in a fun yet memorable way that align young participants with the cause.

WHAT IS GOGGLE GAP?

Skier and snowboarders heads come in all types of shapes and sizes, and fortunately, there are helmets and goggles that can fit every shape. However, you might have to try on a few to find that perfect combination. If your helmet and goggle system doesn’t fit well together, it can leave a portion of your forehead exposed. That’s the Goggle Gap: the space on your forehead that can be left completely bare and uncovered due to a poor-fitting helmet and goggle system. A key step to a safer and more comfortable day on the slopes is to make sure your helmet and goggles fit properly. After all, it’s your noggin—protect it!

WHAT IS THE GOGGLE GAP PROJECT?

The Goggle Gap Project is a national cohesion of like-minded skiers and riders passionate about stopping the Gap. We’ve all seen the Gap, and we’ve all witnessed the fallout. Goggle Gap Mom walking thru the base area with a sun-burned strip of skin across her forehead, little Goggle Gap junior with his brow packed with icy snow, and finally Big Goggle Gap Daddy whose sunglasses underserved him when push came to face plant. We are the Goggle Gap Project. We aim to educate. We aim to remedy. We aim to stop the Gap.

DO I HAVE GOGGLE GAP?

Ha! Look in the mirror silly! Or ask a friend, or your mom or brother.

OMG! I DO HAVE A GAP BETWEEN MY HELMET AND GOGGLES! WHAT DO I DO?

Don’t panic. There is an easy cure, but first we need to take a closer look at your Gap.

HOW WIDE IS THE GAP?

Poor fitting helmet and goggle systems can leave gaps as large as 2 inches wide. Ski and snowboard helmets come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and so do goggles. But not all goggles are designed to fit seamlessly and symmetrically with every helmet, particularly if they are produced by different companies. If there is a gap in helmet and goggle system, it’s a clear sign that your helmet and/or goggles do not fit properly. Plus, the unprotected area can become severely sun or wind burned, or can be exposed to frostbite on cold days.

CAN YOU SEE BARE SKIN THROUGH THE GAP?

The brim of the helmet should be flush with the top of the goggles. Any space larger than ¼ inch means your helmet and goggle setup does not fit properly. Spaces only as wide as ¼ inch or less are probably acceptable, as long as the liner materials of the goggle and helmet cover all skin areas.

BUT WHAT IF I WEAR SUNGLASSES WITH MY HELMET?

Some skiers and snowboarders wear sunglasses with their helmets, particularly on warm spring days. Hey, we have our own style, but there are big benefits for wearing goggles every day. First, the goggle strap keeps them in place if (or when) you fall. Plus, weather can change fast in the mountains, and goggles are your best protection against wind and snow.

ARE MY HELMET AND GOGGLES PROPERLY FITTED TOGETHER?

It’s important to always check the adjustment of your helmet and goggles as they can loosen during usage. The goggle strap should be snug, and aligned properly with the back of the helmet. The helmet chin strap should be adjusted properly to allow a full range of motion. Some helmets come with additional, or removable, fitting pads. Make sure you understand all of the features of the helmet your purchase. Find more information on the proper fit for ski and snowboard helmets right here on Snowlink.

HELP! I’VE TRIED EVERYTHING, BUT I STILL HAVE GOGGLE GAP!

It’s probably time to adjust your setup. You can find the nearest place to shop for ski and snowboard helmets, goggles and other gear at a retail store near you. It’s always best to do this in-store so you can try everything on and find the best combination to offer your noggin best protection all around! Bring your existing helmet and goggles to try on a bunch of different combinations and be sure to get help from the experts at the store!
