AT/BACKCOUNTRY
Also referred to as Alpine Touring, Backcountry, Sidecountry or skiing outside the ropes in untouched, ungroomed terrain, is experiencing a rise in popularity as more and more resorts allow skiers to go beyond the resort lines. Skiing in the backcountry offers the unique challenge of hiking up the mountain, which most backcountry skiers would say is part of earning the experience. But all of them are advanced skiers who understand the risks they're taking for the ultimate reward – a long ride in solitude, untouched powder and a date up close and personal with Nature. FREESKI
A combination of skiing crazy lines and terrain on huge mountains, skiing in terrain parks on jumps, rails and halfpipes and doing tricks, and in many cases, jumping and sliding rails in urban environments, freeski is gaining huge momentum in the ski community. Many people were skiing moguls in the 80s and 90s, and they were fed up with the judging system; it didn't allow for people to have any style in their form. And with the influence of snowboarding and access to terrain parks, a new segment of the skiers began to go and do tricks elsewhere on the mountain for fun, and it grew quite quickly. Read more.
